Lukwago Visits Besigye at Luzira

Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has today paid a visit to former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential flag bearer Dr. Kizza Besigye who is on remand at Luzira Prison on charges of treason. Lukwago who has been under house confinement for more than a fortnight was granted access to Luzira together with other FDC officials to visit Besigye on Friday morning. Yesterday, the former FDC candidate was visited by his wife Winnie Byanyima who revealed that he is coping well with conditions at the prison. Byanyima said hundreds of people are flocking the country's biggest penitentiary to check on him. Besigye was arrested on Wednesday May 11^th after a video of his staged swearing in went viral on social media. He was taken to the North Eastern District of Moroto where he was charged with Treason before being transferred to Luzira Prison on Monday May 16^th. Besigye was paraded before the Nakawa Magistrates Court on Thursday May 18^th, a hearing that was missed by many opposition figures as they were being held under house arrest. He was freshly charged with treason and remanded to Luzira until June 1^st. During the court hearing, he noted that his detention was part of the government's mission to harm him adding that his life was endangered in prison. He has since resorted to preparing his own food. A number of other opposition figures including Nakawa MP Hon. Kabaziguruka, FDC secretary for Mobilisation Ingrid Turinawe, FDC spokesperson Ssemujju Nganda remain under close surveillance over what the police termed as "their ability to cause chaos in the city centre"
