Museveni: Debates are for School Children

NRM Candidate Yoweri Museveni has broken silence on why he shunned the presidential debate held Friday night at Kampala Serena Hotel, saying he lacked time for the function. Describing the debate as an activity for "school children," Museveni said he started participating in debates while in secondary school and that there is no way he could fear taking part in the discussion. "Debates were activities for school children," said Museveni while briefing journalists at Rwakitura on Sunday. "At Ntare School, we would travel to Bweranyangi Girls School and Buddo School for debates. Therefore I could not comprehend how prospective national leaders could embrace an activity for school children," Museveni said in Runyankole as journalists struggled with rib-cracking laughter. Critics accused Museveni of fearing the contest in which the rest of presidential candidates discussed issues of national interest. Dr Kizza Besigye said he was "truly disappointed" that Museveni did not make it to the debate as promised by organisers led by former Principal Judge James Ogoola. Speaking in Runyankole, Museveni revealed that organisers of the function told him how they were impressed by the presidential debates in United States thus choosing to hold one here in Uganda. Museveni said not everything that happens in United States is necessarily good for Uganda. "There are things the Americans do that we rejected here in Uganda," added the head-of-state. Many thought he was referring to homosexuality which he is opposed to. "That day I had three rallies to conduct. If I had enough time, I would have just gone there after all its just debating. Is there anyone who can debate better than Museveni?" he wondered. He also ruled out his participation in the debate slated for February 10, saying his rallies end on February 16. "I need to participate in a debate while fresh. I shouldn't go for the debate when I am tired. I need a rest just like anyone preparing for a competition."
