Here's How to Use a USB Stick to Log-in to Gmail More Securely

Here's How to Use a USB Stick to Log-in to Gmail More Securely

If you've set up two-step authentication for your Gmail account you probably already know it can sometimes be a bit annoying to use your mobile to log you in each time -- especially if you don't tend to keep your handset charged or at your side 24/7 Well, there's actually another option that might suit you better and it involves plugging in a USB stick instead. According to Google, not only could this method be more suited to some people, but it may also provide more effective protection against phishing attacks. To get started you'll need a USB stick that's up to the job and compatible with the FIDO Universal 2nd Factor (U2F) standard. You'll also need to ensure you have the latest version of Chrome (40+) on your Chrome OS, Windows, Mac OS, or Linux machine. Go to the two-step verification page from your Google account. You'll find it under Signing in to Google. If you don't already have two-step authentication switched on, it's time to do that now. If you already have it set up, Security Key appears as one of the other options at the top of your settings page. So head there and hit Add Security Key, which will begin the setup. Click Register and put your USB key into a USP port and push the button on the stick itself. You can then click Done and you're ready to roll. This means that whenever Google's two-step process kicks in in future, you'll be able to use the stick instead of the Authenticator app on your phone.   You can use that same key for more than one account, but make sure you have the Authenticator app and any backup codes you need just in case the USB goes missing -- hey, it happens.
